Today Mrs Hughes reminded us it was National Poetry Day. She posted a poem in the school daily notices. This poem by Kenn Nesbitt inspired us to get creative. Your child bought home their own GLURP alien today.

Cooperative games - discovery time
This week we used our discovery time to play co operative games.
We focused on working together as a good team.
We did this by encouraging each other, persevering at a task and making sure we included everyone.
Check out the photos!

Musical Hula hoops
We started with 13 hula hoops, when the music stopped the children had to stand in a hoop, then one was taken away. We ended up with only 2 hoops, with 18 children squeezed into them. |
Groups had to unscramble the sentence as fast as they could. |
Moving the bean bag around the circle using only our feet |
This took perseverance and concentration |

New buddy class
Room 7 and Room 14 are buddy classes this term.
Mrs Hedge and her year 3 and 4 students came up to our room this Friday for our 2nd buddy class.
Our mathematics strand unit this term is measurement, so this was our focus.
First the big buddies traced around their little buddies, then we looked around the room to see what we could use to measure different parts of their outlines.

Vikki and her buddy using pens to measure how tall she is. |
Blocks were a popular way to measure length |

The children came up with interesting ways to measure their outlines.
Pens, crayons, blocks, handprints, feet, even heads were used as a unit to measure with.
We've been learning about fractions
Discovery time this week focused on fractions.
We made our own snowflakes.
First we had to fold the paper in half, then in half again, then in half again. Next we cut shapes.
Unfolding the paper and seeing our snowflake designs was exciting!
Not one snow flake was the same.
We decorated Gingerbread men, we used paper to collage and jovi's to colour.
We then had to cut our gingerbread man into halves or quarters.
We had butterflies and ladybugs to paint.
We had to make sure that each half was the same.
We had foam fraction shapes to explore.
We made fraction pictures or made whole circles.
We played the pizza fraction game on the iPads.
