Hockey experts

We have had 4 hockey sessions.  What a great opportunity.  We learned a lot.  It was trickier than it looked.    Everyone had a go.  We got better at it!

Balancing the ball on the stick was a challenge

Nice dribbling Mitchell!

We listened to the instructions

Checking Charlie

After writing time Room Seven are learning how to check and self monitor our work.
We do this with the help of 'Checking Charlie'.
'Checking Charlie' reminds us of 8 things that we need to make sure we are doing in our writing...such as "have I started with a capital letter?", "have I caught some sounds in tricky words?", "are there finger spaces between my words?".
The pictures below show them checking their writing with a partner.  Everyone is hoping for 8 ticks, but we know if we don't have 8 there is something to work on and remember next writing time.

100 days of school - day 29

The chain is almost halfway down the slide

The chain nearly touches the ground

The chain stretches to the seventh rung of the monkey bars
On day 29 we decided to measure our chain outside in the playground.
How long do you think it will be on day 100?

Our experiment

Inspired by the show - 'The magical world of crazy science',
Mrs O'Leary showed the class her own 'magic' trick.

Equipment needed: a large PLASTIC bag, water, sharpened pencils.

"What do you think will happen if I fill the bag with water and poke the sharp pencil through it?" she asked.
First we made predictions.  Eight children thought the bag would leak and Mrs O'Leary would get drenched.  Five children thought it would be fine, the bag would not leak.

Check out the photos below to see who was right!

This is what the bag looked like with 14 pencils poked through it! No leaks!

This is what happened when we took out the pencils!

100 days of school

Kiwi and Tui syndicates are counting the days we are at school.
When we get to day 100 we will have a special celebration!
In Room 7 we have a 100 days of school board, every day we discuss the number of the day.
We record the number in different ways and discuss place value, all this number talk adds to our ever increasing number knowledge.
Check out the photos below - we are already at day 16!

Our 100 days of school board

Today we measured our paper chain.  It is almost as tall as Suhani

It is shorter than the door

It is taller than a chair

Welcome to 2015!

Hi there,  I hope you have all had a fabulous summer.  I have enjoyed the weather doing lots of beach activities with my family as well as a trip to the Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay.
I am excited about another great year at Redwood school.  Over this first week we will get to know each other as a class and establish routines and expectations that will help our class run smoothly.  There will be a few notices home and I will post some general information to help you get acquainted with the Room 7 learning programme.
Thanks,
Emma O'Leary
