Pirate Polly - Discovery time

Room 7 pirates

Discovery time this week had a pirate theme.
Children could choose to make a treasure map, make a pirates hat and decorate it, build a pirate ship with blocks, read some pirate books or colour-in some pirate themed pictures.
We focused on the NZC Key competencies of managing self and relating to others, this meant the children had to work together, share equipment, and persevere to complete tasks.

Annie with her treasure map and her 'arghh me hearties' grimace!

Over the last two weeks we have been writing about Pirate Polly. We were introduced to her through the illustration below.

We worked on some shared writing and then our own writing.

First we described Pirate Polly, then we wrote about why we thought she was so happy, then we imagined the adventures she had been on.

Our writing is now displayed in the classroom

Buddy class

Every Friday morning Room 7 and Room 9 get together with Room 11 for buddy class.
Mr Heyes is the Room 11 teacher, he has a class of year 4 students.
We use this time to share each other's work, get to know each other and have fun with our big kid buddies. Buddy class time reinforces our RED values and the concept of tuakana-teina.
Below are photos of Room 7 children reading with their buddies.

Tawa Zone sports day

Today we walked down to St Francis Xavier school
for the annual Tawa Zone Year 1/2 Sports day

The sun was shining as all of the Tawa Primary schools got together
for some fun cross-grouped games.

Lucy dribbling the ball in a soccer inspired relay

There were some tricky skills to learn quickly.

Malisha resting between games...it was tiring work!

Thaddeus ready to hula

Great catch Caylis!

We had a great if not tiring time, we got back to school just in time for lunch.
St Francis Xavier school you were fabulous hosts.
The senior children did an awesome job running the relays
and teaching our children new games and skills, ka pai!

Maths problem solving

Here is the problem

We talked about what is the important information in the problem.  We then brainstormed how we could solve it.  "We could draw the teddies", said Lucy.  We got into groups and drew 2 buttons onto each teddy bear.  We then counted them all to figure out how many buttons mother bear needed.

Here are our results

We then talked about how else we could get to the answer.  "We could count up in 2's" said Caylis.  Good thinking, we skip counted in 2's, and realised this is much faster than counting all of the buttons.  Mother bear then made some extra jackets so we counted on from 10 to figure out how many buttons she needed.
Great problem solving Room 7!

100 days of school...update

Here is our paper chain at day 28.

It is not as long as a table yet...

but it is almost as tall as Malisha!

Kiwi/Tui assembly - Friday 7th March

It was Room 7's turn to host syndicate assembly.  We sat up the front and spoke in big loud voices when we were asked to introduce and share items.

Everyone did a great job sharing their, 'There's a wocket in my pocket' themed art and writing.

Wackey Wednesday...

Here are just a few 'Wackey' things that appeared in Room 7 on Wednesday morning.

It all began with that shoe on the wall.  A shoe on the wall shouldn't be there at all!

There was a bit of swapping around and an odd looking book bag basket.

Is that washing hanging on the line?
The children had a great time searching for 'Wackey' things inside the classroom.

Let's celebrate Dr Seuss birthday!

Plan for the week:

Monday - Pyjama party!  Hope to see you all in your PJ's!  We will read 'The foot book' and turn our footprints into amazing pieces of art!

Tuesday - Let's read 'There's a wocket in my pocket'... maybe a 'nassbroom' in our classroom?  What amazing new creature can you imagine up?

Wednesday - I'm hoping it's not a 'Wackey Wednesday...!'

Thursday - Word families from 'The cat in the hat'

Friday - Our class hosts Kiwi/Tui syndicate assembly, we will share some of our Dr Seuss work.
You are welcome to come to assembly which begins after morning tea break (about 10:55am) in the hall and finishes at 11:30ish.  Room 7 would love to see you there!

I'm sure you recognise at least one of the characters above!
