Let's do some predicting!

Before writing today Mrs O'Leary was feeling a bit crazy and asked the class to predict what would happen when she pushed a pencil through a plastic bag full of water.
"The water will come out" most of the class said.
"There will be a big mess" said Avaya.
Next Mrs O'Leary had to follow through and carry out her crazy experiment... "we're all going to get wet!" the class responded.
Check out the photos below to see what happened.
Once Mrs O'Leary pushed a pencil through the bag every child had a go.

The bag was very heavy

The pencil acts as a seal - like a plug - keeping the water safe inside the bag.

13 pencils in the bag
We decided to take the pencils out.
The bag turned into a fountain, squirting water out of the many holes.

So much fun and easy to try at home!

Here are some of our stories:

We filled a bag with water.  Then we poked a pencil into the bag. The water did not come out.

When we filled the plastic bag the water didn't come out.  We took the pencil out of the bag.  Everyone got wet.

We filled a plastic bag with water.  Then we pushed the pencil into the bag. "Ahhh" the water stayed in the bag.  When we took the pencil out the water came out.

We put pencils into the plastic bag.  The plastic bag did not leak.
