Mixing things up!

Our topic this term  is 'How the world works in the kitchen'.  We discussed what it means to mix something.  We wondered what would happen if we mixed water, flour and salt.
Some clever children thought we would make a dough!
We started adding the ingredients, the mixture became very sticky and sloppy.
We brainstormed how to change it to make a dough we could shape.
"We could add more...water", some children replied.
Good scientists make predictions and then do an experiment to see if their guesses were right.
We added more water and... it got runnier!  "More flour!" we decided.
Finally the mixture made a dough.
We each got some to shape. The next day once the dough had harden we painted our creations.
The ingredients are mixed together

It's looking a bit runny!

We tried adding more water

The finished creations!

Next we wondered what would happen if we changed some of the ingredients.  Would the dough be the same if we used water and cornflour?  We first noticed a difference in how the cornflour felt.  "Its very silky" said Liam.  This time we added the water slowly and watched how the mixture changed.

The mixture was hard but runny at the same time!

The mixture was very thick and hard to mix

The mixture looked like runny liquid but it moved very slowly when we tried to pour it.

Lots of messy fun!

We decided this mixture was no good for shaping like a dough.  We had to take our table outside it was so messy!
As the mixture dried it turned into a chalk-like texture.  Lucky Jake had his digger to help scrap the table clean!

By the end of lunchtime the table was clean again.  Good job guys!

New buddy class

Most Fridays Room 7 gets together with our buddy class.
This term we are lucky to have Room 11 as our buddies.
Our buddies are year 4 children, the classroom teacher is Mr Hayes.
Last week Mrs Arlidge brought the class up to Room 7 and the children had the chance to read to and with their buddies.

100 days smarter!

Kiwi and Tui syndicates celebrated our 100th day at school.
Children brought in their collections of 100 'somethings' and the class was split between the classrooms for some 100 based fun activities to celebrate.

Huxley made a truck out of 100 Lego pieces

100 piece puzzle

Kiwi and Tui children were asked to bring a can of food as part of the celebration.  We had fun grouping and counting the cans...and stacking them!  There were well over 100 cans that have since been donated to the local food bank.

Room 7 has been adding a link to a paper chain everyday they are at school.  Today we did our final measure!  The chain with 100 links reaches from our classroom door right across the room!

Every child can hold onto the paper chain...there is lots of room.

We carried it very carefully to the playground.  We had to work together so our paper chain would not break!

The chain reaches to the ground and then some..."100!" we yelled.

The chain is now a lot longer than the monkey bars!

New admin block!

The new administration block was officially opened on the 30th of July.  The prefab buildings were taken away in spectacular fashion!  We went and checked it out!
The buildings were split in two.

We're glad it wasn't a windy day!

As easy as that!  Picked up, plonked onto a truck and driven away!
