Welcome to Term 3!

What a great first day in room 7!
Here are a few reminders.

Image result for 100 days of school

On Friday this week we celebrate our 100th day of school.  Have you got your collection of 100 'somethings' ready?  Bring them into Room 7 any day this week, we will explore the collections on Friday as part of our celebration day.

Oral language for the first few weeks will have the children participating in a compliment circle.  They will learn how to give a compliment and experience the feeling of receiving a compliment.  It is amazing how this simple act then engrains itself into our everyday classroom culture.

Today's writing

Today the children were set the challenge to write about something they did in the school holidays...but there was a twist...they could be truthful or they could try and trick the class.
Can you figure out who was telling the truth and who was telling a fib?

I ate an ice cream in the paddling pool.  It was cold but it didn't matter I just enjoyed it.

In the holidays I went to Armageddon.  I had a Zombie Chew because Noah gave me it.  I saw the wrestling, I liked the chickenman.

In the holidays I went to the moon but just as I landed the moon melted.  Why did the moon melt? Because our rocket was made out of concrete so it smashed the moon!  We had to fall down and down.  It got near bedtime so we had to sleep in the trees.

In the holidays I went to the snow.

In the weekend I went fishing with my Dad.  I was so surprised.

In the weekend I watched TV with popcorn and when my Mum was making popcorn it exploded.  It went into the TV room so we swam on it and when I was swimming in it I ate it.

My cousins are silly and funny.  Their mother makes pancakes for breakfast.  We went to Te Papa.

I went skydiving over the Brooklyn Bridge.  It was fun, I nearly touched the water.

Mrs Arlidge's visit

Room 7 were lucky to have Mrs Arlidge come and talk with us and show us some WW1 artifacts.

We have been learning about how people communicated 100 years ago.
Mrs Arlidge showed us a collection of WW1 postcards.
She showed us her favourites.
They had messages printed on them, some were embroidered with beautiful pictures and some were photos that had been turned into postcards.

We learned about a medical soldier called David Richie.  Mrs Arlidge showed us his medals, his pay book and a telescope he used to find injured soldiers in WW1.

We were shown some of the equipment soldiers wore.

Sydney tried on a Sam Browne belt.  This held a soldiers pistol and sword.
Ritz tried on a soldiers 'webbing'.  This held a first-aid kit, rifle cleaning kit, bullets, food and two water bottles.  "It is quite heavy" said Ritz
Mitchell wore a soldiers 'great coat'.  We learned that soldiers left the back buttons open so they could ride comfortably on their horses.
Princess Mary sent the soldiers a Christmas present, a gold box full of chocolates and a postcard with photos of the king and queen and their family.

The helmet was very heavy, hard and rough.

Sion wears a 'lemon squeezer' hat and Lily a captains hat.

Everyone had the chance to try on a hat, helmet or coat.
We learned why they were all different, and who wore what.

Thank you for sharing your special memorabilia Mrs Arlidge.
We learned a lot of interesting facts about what life was like at war 100 years ago.

100 days of school - update

Each day we are at school we add a link to our paper chain.
Today we measured our chain outside.
There are 78 links in our chain.
WOW it is long!

Our chain is a lot longer than the slide

It reaches almost to the end of the monkey bars!

It touches the ground and then some!

We can all hold part of our paper chain!

We are still wondering how long it will be on day 100?
Not too long to go now!

It was a frosty morning...

Tawa had its first real frost yesterday morning.
When I arrived at school the grounds were covered in a shimmering blanket of ice.

In class we talked about what the children had noticed on this cold morning.  Then we rugged up warm and went on a frost hunt.

We found frost in the shady parts of the school..."where has all the rest gone?" I asked,  "It has melted in the sun", said Mitchell.
Back in the warm of our room we brainstormed words and wrote  about what we had seen, felt and heard outside.  Check out some of our writing below.

I was freezing.  I was holding a frozen leaf.
Written by Sion

The frozen frost was super cold shivering on my hands.
I drew on the frost.
Written by Lily

It was freezing.  My hands got cold, they got sore.  It was a lot of fun.
Then I saw grass and it was icy.
Written by Mitchell

I felt freezing when we touched the ice.
Written by Bryn

It was so freezing. My hands got too cold when I first came inside.
If I got colder I would turn into a snowman.
Oh bother!

We have decided to make a book of our stories so that we can remember the cold, cold, frosty morning.
Come and see it on our library shelf!

Pataka Trip

This week Kiwi and Tui syndicates have visited Pataka as part of our Topic this term.
We started with a bus ride.

Once at Pataka we started with learning about the essentials items in an ANZAC soldiers kit.

Almost all of the essentials laid out.  What's left in the kit?

Next we went into the workroom and created our own poppies.
We followed instructions and asked for help if we needed it.

Sydney cutting out a leaf for her poppy.
Concentrating while cutting.

Fantastic poppy Jake!

Buddy class - ANZAC biscuits

Last week Rooms 15 and 7 worked together to make ANZAC biscuits.  The children had to follow the recipe to make their very own biscuit.  They measured out the ingredients, mixed them in a cup then rolled out their biscuit.  Check out the photos...

Assembly and ANZAC Ted

Well done on hosting Kiwi/Tui Assembly on Friday.
All the children did a great job considering we didn't have long to practice.
The plan was to practice on Thursday afternoon...and then the rain came down...!
Below is our educreations about the story ANZAC Ted.

We drew our own ANZAC Ted's.  We followed step-by-step instructions then painted them.
They are now displayed in the classroom.
